Ballyhass Scholarships Week 2

Update on the progression of our scholarships after week 2

The scholars were greeted with amazing weather for the second week running and perhaps have been lulled into a false sense of security. But as coaches we will definitely take it. The better the weather the better the progression. It does tend to be the toughest part of the course, the weather conditions. Alot of our selection process tends to be on how we perceive the students will cope with those conditions and still be able to have a good attitude. So far so good this year, all the scholars are doing extremely well.

The big news this week is that the Kayaking students have already past their level 1 Kayaking Skills and have received their certs from the ICU (Irish Canoe Union). This tends to happen quite quickly but is still a fabulous achievement on only their second week. Just goes to show that anyone can improve their safety skills on the water in just a matter of weeks. They will be moving onto more advance kayaking skills over the next few weeks. An addition to the Kayaking Scholarship this year is the fact that they will be doing an element of rock climbing skills also. The guys will be starting on site with our natural climbing faces and our indoor bouldering wall to learn the basics. David and Darren will then be taking to the road and show them some of our natural climbing and kayaking spots on our doorstep. Stay tuned over the next few weeks to see how this progresses.

On the wakeboarding front, all the students were giving their cutting edge certs and booklets this week. This is our in house designed wakeboarding progression course. Basically its a trick list that the students will learn through bronze, sliver, gold and platinum levels. Each week we will aim to tick the next tricks off the list. The course was designed in such away that if we follow the trick list we end up with really well rounded wakeboarders. The basics are key and that is what we are trying to drive home over this winter and next spring. Already we have a few scholars that have been on cutting edge camps during the season so it will be exciting to see these students progress all the while offering great inspiration and targets to the other scholars who are newer to the sport. We find having a mix of abilities on the course really helps to push riders to the max of their capability at any one time.

For both sets of scholarships we introduced them to winter wetsuits and winter weather equipment that would benefit them throughout the course. We are big believers in the outdoors and in the adventure industry in this country. As they say there is no bad weather only bad gear. I think this is so true in Ireland. The Irish sometimes go into hibernation just because of a bit of drizzle, cold or wind. The benefits of being outdoors doesn't go away and there is no excuse not to take advantage of it 12 months of the year.

We are off to a great start this year and we are excited to see how far these scholars can push themselves. Stay tuned for next weeks updates.
