Aquapark Supervisor/Activities Instructor

Name

Ray Walsh

What year did you start working in Ballyhass?

2016

What do you enjoy about the outdoors?

How the outdoors can bring you so far away from busy everyday life, it acts almost as a reset function for your mind. Living in a town, commuting too a city and confined to a lecture room for 4 years really makes me appreciate the freedom I get when either working, going on a day trip to peaks or sands or simply just a walk through the Greenlands of a nearby trail.

What is your favourite activity in Ballyhass and why?

Leap of faith or abseiling. Once clipped on, there is that fear of the unknown, will I be able to do this or not, will I catch this bar or not, can I let myself lean back and not see down the cliff where I am going or not. But once initiated, once you start that jump, or lean back down that cliff, the feeling of uncertainty just stops for a second until the feeling of achievement takes over and floods your body with adrenaline. That rush is what makes you addicted to pushing yourself to do it over and over again.

What are your other interests and hobbies?

I am involved in athletics, both competing and coaching. Areas of speciality are sprinting distances and pole vault. There is just something addictive about running with a big pole and jumping up over a high bar that holds onto you.

What is your biggest achievement?

Even though this isnt my biggest achievement,Coming 3rd in the national senior pole vault championships in 2017 has thought me the most about myself. It was a moment I will never forget as it was a break through for me. Going into that competition, I had no idea that I would jump as high as I did to grab that 3rd spot on the podium.

What three words would you use to describe yourself?

Funny, thrill-seeking, energetic

What is your personal motto?

If you really want something, you'll have to work for it, it's not just going to happen without dedication

What does being a member of Team Ballyhass mean to you?

It means that when I wake up to go to work, everyday will be totally different to the last. There is repetition without repition. The team grafts and moulds the person you really are as there is no other place that offers the oppertunities to lead, entertain and help others achieve what might be a little goal in your head, but to someone else it might be the elephant in the room.
