We get a lot of the same questions being asked day in day out, so we wanted to create a resource where you will find all the most commonly asked questions. If you dont see what you are looking for here let us know and we will add it in. Feel free to email info@ballyhasslakes.ie or call 022 27773 and the office team will take care of you.

Activities

There are two of us who want to do activities, can we just turn up?

Since we have introduced Wakeboarding as an activity we can now offer a great experience for indviduals and up. It is important that you make an advance booking for all activities. The other adventures are predominantly best suited for a group. We look for a minimum of six people to take part in activities. This is because we want to provide the best experience possible. With a group it is far more fun as we can create a whole event out of each activity, playing games and little competitions between members of the group. Would you prefer to kayak around in circles on the lake on your own or race your mates in little relay races and challenge your water polo skills?

Can we just do one activity?

Yes  now that we offer wakeboarding  you can book a a session for yourself. There are 15 minute time slots with the availability always shown live on the website.  For the other adventure activities - in general we need to get our instructors in for a minimum of half a day which is three hours or two activities so that is why we only offer a minimum of two acivities. It also comes back to the best experience possible, we truely believe that to get the best out of Ballyhass you really need to spend a minimum of three hours here. You wont regret it! On occasion one activity is possible if you are willing to come at 4.00pm, this is because we will have instructors already on site and finished with our daily programme which runs from 9.30 - 4.00pm. Call the office on 022 27773 and we will always do our best to fit you in.

How long do we have to book in advance?

This is very much dependent on the size of your group. If you have less than 24 anything up to 48hrs before is fine. You can book online or call the office and the booking team will be more than happy to sort you out. If you have less than 10, the day before is usually plenty of time and its always worth giving us try even on the day. If you are flexible with time we can usually fit you in, that afternoon. Anything over 30 its best to give us longer notice so you can be guarnteed your activity choices. For Wakeboarding you can book on line and select you own time slot up to the day before you wish to arrive.   If you are seeking a time slot on the same day as your arrival you will need to telephone us to check the availability.

What activities are suitable for adults?

All our activities are suitable for adults. We are a group activity centre meaning that our instructors will tailor each activity to the abilities of each group. So for adults we will make each activity more challenging to the group (or easier depending on the abilities). The difference between an adult group and juvenille is quite stark, no two sessions are the same. So if you like the look of a certain activity dont be afraid to request it, we will create the best possible experience for your group.

What activities are suitable for children?

Similar to the answer above, all activities are suitable to children 8yrs and up. We will tailor each session to the age profile and ability of the group.

My child is under 8 can they take part in activities?

Activity wise no im afraid not. This is a purely physical reason rather than a safety one. There is a physical element to everything we do here at the lakes and children under 8 often are unable to complete the activity. If you take kayaking as an example, the paddles are over six feet long and the boat is over ten feet long. Children that young just wont be able to keep up with older participants and will often get frustrated and have a bad first experience. We are opening a whole world of new sport to people and we would hate for someone to be turned off because they were introduced too early. They have tonnes of time so we would recommend not too rush it, they will thank you after!

Im nervous of heights or a particular activity, will I have to do it?

Absolutely not. We are purely a challenge by choice centre, you will never be forced to do anything you dont want to do. Just an attempt on some activities can be as much of an achievement as others going all the way to the top. Our instructors are excellent at encouraging participants to try something they might not have done before but to stress you will never be forced to do any activity.

Can some of my group do different activities than the others?

No. Each group must do the same activities. We will schedule instructors to stick with your group for the day so they can only be on one activity at a time. Our perfect group size is 12 so if you have a group of 24 we will split you into two groups. Group 1 could be doing kayaking first while group 2 is doing zip line and then switch over for the second session.

Can we just rent a kayak and go out ourselves, or use my own boat?

No. It is a strict requirement of our insurance that at all times, clients out on the water must be supervised by our instructors. If you would like to use your own boat in a session ran by one of our instructors this is fine, but it will be subject to a safety check before going on the water.

Is there something for me to do on site while my group is on activities?

There is a nice walk that you can take around the lake and you are free to walk around with the group and observe the activities. We will be happy to sort you out with teas & coffees while you are waiting for your group. There is always the option of renting a fishing rod which is suitable for all ages and abilities.

What do I bring for a day at Ballyhass?

Swimming Togs, A towel, wet shoes or old shoes that you can get wet, warm clothing, hat, fleece top, runners for dry activities, rain coat & pants, sun cream, packed lunch, lots of drinks. See the essential info section for full details.

Is there cafe on site?

No cafe, but we do have a small tuck shop which sells drinks, bars & tatyos. We will be happy to provide you with complementary teas & coffees in the office while you are on site. Feel free to bring what ever food you would like. We encourage this as it keeps the overall cost of the day down for you. Its tough times so we want to help you get the most out of the day in any way we can.

Can we arrange catering for our group?

Absolutely. We offer either a hot lunch which consists of a hot pot type meal, chicken curry, Irish stew, chicken bake, lasagne etc with sides, desserts & teas/coffees or a cold lunch of sandwich, tatyos, fruit & drink. Hot is €10 per person & cold is €5 per person. These must be booked in advance.

Fishing

How much is it to go fishing?

A full list of current prices is listed on our Fishing Centre pasge. These are daily rates.

What time do you open?

We open at 9am each day and you are invited to fish right up till dusk. The earlier you arrive the better value you will get out of your ticket.

How many fish can I keep?

On a Catch and release you are not permitted to keep any fish. You must put back all fish. If you purchase a take home ticket, you are allowed to take a max of two fish.

How much is it for my child to fish?

We have a juvenile ticket (under 16) for €10. This covers four hours fishing, but they must be accompanied by a paying adult.

Can I take more than one rod down?

No, you are only allowed take down one rod at a time. The ticket prices are per rod, so if you would like to bring down more than one you will need to buy an additional permit. If you would like to switch between bait and fly rods, this is fine but you must return to reception to inform us that you are switching lakes.

Why is bait fishing not allowed on the main lake?

Bait fishing does far more damage to the fish than those caught on the fly, hence the fish do not survive as long. We stock the smaller lake far more often to offset this. We also have a healthy breeding stock in the main lake that it is vital to protect.

Can I take a boat out on the small lake?

There are no boats on the small lake, it is a purely bank fishing lake.

Are there other water activities on the main lake while angling?

Yes, There can be other users such as wakeboarders or kayakers on the water at times.  The water space for boat fly angling is restricted at these times.

Can I bring someone out on the boat who is not fishing?

No. The boats for anglers only. They are not available for rent by the general public. Its important that anglers have as little distraction as possible. We keep any activities to one end of the lake and leave the top end exclusively for anglers.

Can I use power bait or maggots?

Under no circumstances can powerbait or maggots be used on the lake. STRICTLY FORBIDDEN. Power bait in particular will not only make the fish sick but it will also prevent anybody else on the lake from catching fish. Think of it as stealing everyone else s permit on the lake. If anybody is caught using an illegal fishing substance it will be confiscated and they will be asked to leave immediately.

Is there group discounts for fishing?

There is, but each group is different. Some might need gear, lessons, supervision or all three so discounts are offered on a per group basis. Call the office on 022 27773 to arrange a booking.
