Courses

At Ballyhass Lakes we promote fly fishing and encourage participation for all ages.  Assistance is always available from the fishery staff who will advise on fly selection, preparation of the leaders and basic casting at any time.

In addition we hold one day fly fishing courses.  Many are presented by Glenda Powell who regularly gives excellent courses on a Saturday or Sunday.  Glenda is Ireland best know instructor and is the current World female distance casting champion.  She is also one of the most highly qualified instructors currently working in Ireland. 



Fly Casting clinics
In response to constant requests we have introduced a simple one hour session of Fly Casting suitable for all those who want to experience the art of casting and those who have fallen into some bad habits!  Fly rods are supplied but do bring your own.    

There are three different levels, intro 1 and 2  and session 3 is a fishing in the company of the Ghillie.

All sessions only Euro 30.  Advance reservation essential.   

Advanced Courses
Some courses are for advanced anglers where further casting techniques, such as roll and Spey casting is taught.

Workshops

Open day for anglers Saturday March 26th 2011

 

An action-packed information day for anglers is being held at Ballyhass Lakes Holiday Village and is open to all those interested in angling.

 

Top Irish anglers will be at Ballyhass for a series of lectures, demonstrations and one-to-one guidance and assistance.  All anglers are welcome and can attend all of the demonstration and get tuition from any of the instructors.  The entry fee is only Euro 10 per person (children under 8 free). Times 09.00 - 18.00. No reservation required.

 

Entomology:  Well known angler Michael Drinan will have live samples of marine insect life in petree dishes and will identify the fly life that is the food for Trout. In addition he will demonstrate how to tie flies to match the natural  larvae and flies.  Learn to identify the fly at the different stages of their development. As well as being an excellent angler .

 

Casting tuition:  Several clinics on fly casting will take place during the day.  Denis Cronin (Macroom)   and his team will give one to one assistance to anglers to improve their distance and presentation.

 

Fly angling Techniques:  Well know International Angler John Buckley will give small group clinics actually demonstrating leader make up and presentation, retrieval methods, landing techniques and more.  Learn form the master!

 

Tackle and fly selection:  Resident fishery manager Tom Lofts will be on hand to advise on tackle issues, and fly selection in particular.

 

Discounts and deals:  for the open day there will many items for sale at greatly reduced prices.

 

In addition to attending all demonstrations, attendees will be invited to fish for the day on a catch and release basis on both lakes at Ballyhass.



Juvenile Courses
Juvenile courses are also held on demand usually on Saturday mornings.  These combine and introduction to fly fishing with plenty of time on the water. the Duration is usually about 3 hours and suitable for participants aged between 11 and 16.
